This series of articles will feature ideas for zodiac inspired handmade gifts from members of the Trans-Canada Etsy Team. Each new zodiac month will begin with an introduction to the qualities associated with the present astrology sun sign. Throughout the rest of the month I will feature items which have those qualities and/or would be a suitable gift idea for people of that sign.
Sagittarius - The Centaur and Archer
23 November - 21 December
Archetypes - Student, Traveler, Teacher, Philosopher
Sagittarius is the 9th sign of the zodiac and is associated with the expansive qualities of the planet Jupiter. In the astrological chart (or wheel) of 12 houses it is the ruler of the 9th, the house of religion, philosophy, long journeys and higher education. Sagittarius is a fire sign and is symbolized by the centaur with a bow and arrow drawn and ready to be aimed. The centaur is a mythical creature with the lower body of a horse and the upper body of a man, symbolizing the strength and speed of the animal and the intellect and potential wisdom of the human. Sagittarius is associated with Chiron, a centaur who was educated by Artemis and Apollo to later become a teacher of Greek healers, warriors and magicians. He was wounded by a poisoned arrow which initiated him into his role as the 'wounded healer'.
Sagittarians relate to the world through a need for expansion. As a teacher and student growth is found through knowledge, as a traveler, or gypsy, it comes through physical travel and as a philosopher it comes intuitively through expanding the consciousness. Unlike the secretive Scorpio, Sagittarians like to share stories of their exploits, visions and ideals with others. Sagittarians have a powerful need to be challenged. The arrow is a symbol of direction and the Sagittarian's compulsion for new targets or challenges to keep them moving forward.
People with a strong presence of Sagittarius in their charts: Sun in Sagittarius, Moon in Sagittarius, Sagittarius rising or other prominent influence in their astrology chart can have the following qualities:broad and expansive attitude, adventurous, love of freedom, enthusiasm, optimism, irresponsible, excess, philosophical, tactless, intellectual, restless, honest, love for travel, exuberant, boisterous, risk taker, open-minded, outspoken, deep thinker, inconsiderate, love for learning
Possible vocational calling:
Some of the things which may influence the type of vocation chosen by Sagittarian people are the need for a challenge, a sense of adventure and their love for learning and teaching. With this combination of qualities they may choose to be teachers, philosophers or pursue a career in sport or outdoor adventure. They will not often be happy in an office and may choose something which takes them outdoors or traveling away from home. Their love for expanding the mind and spirit may even lead them to careers in law or religion.
