On the Ninth Day of Christmas

Welcome to day 8. Only a few more short days to go.

Today we meet OffTheHooks and PrairiePeasant.

OffTheHooks is the shop of Ashley from Lethbridge, AB. Ashley creates wearable pieces, housewares, and more from yarns, much of which she dyes and spins herself.

Ashley, like many of us, claims that her favorite part of the holiday is all the food, but also really enjoys bringing a DIY aspect to her holiday season.

I was thinking about how to make the holiday a little more green and did some googling. This website has an extensive listing of DIY gift ideas

Now, we meet Laura of PrairiePeasant. Located in Winnipeg, MB, look in her shop for eco-friendly journals, cards and envelopes.

Laura shares this favorite family tradition and recipe.

My family has a Christmas tradition of gathering for the day, beginning mid-morning with breakfast. Since my parents have downsized from their home, my home is often the gathering place now. This year I think I'll be making these German Apple Pancakes for breakfast. I often double the recipe and use a 9x13" glass baking pan for baking. They are delicious! GERMAN APPLE PANCAKE 2-3 apples 3-4 TBSP. butter 1 tsp. cinnamon 3-4 TBSP. sugar 3 eggs 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup milk Additional butter and cinnamon and sugar. Preheat oven to 500 degrees F. Peel, core and slice apples. Melt 3-4 TBSP. butter in a heavy iron fry pan. (The number of apples and amount of butter is dependent on the size of the apples.) Put sliced apples in the pan and fry for about 5 minutes to soften. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, stir to mix. While apples are frying mix eggs, milk and flour until well blended. Pour batter over fried apples. Place on center rack in oven and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and dot with thin pats of butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar to taste. Return to the oven for another 3 minutes or until the pancake is brown on top. Remove from oven. Serve hot.
